So I have some pretty fantastic dreams… this is one of them…
I slowly open my eyes. I can feel I am in a very plush bed, the blankets have fully enveloped me. My eyes squint and strain to see through the bright white lights above. As I adjust to see, I can make out a bedroom that is white and gray, very modern and minimalistic.
I roll over on to my side and there I see a middle aged man. He is handsome, has short brown hair and a clean shaven face. He smiles at me and then gently caresses my face with his hand. I feel as if I should know this man, that this man is my husband… although I have never met him before. I feel a smile push out onto my face, even though I didn’t think to do it.
I roll out of bed and begin to walk about the room.
My vision is blurred as I look around the unfamiliar white room. Then suddenly I start seeing flashes of me laughing with another man. The flashes of bright warm light flood my vision. I feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the love I have with this other man. I never see his face, just a blurred outline of him smiling and laughing with me. I feel happy, at peace, at home. The vision fades away and I come back to see the white stark room in front of me, crisp and clear.
I walk to the kitchen. On the walls in the hallways are pictures of me with my husband. We have 2 kids. They have left the house, moved out to start lives of their own. I feel like I love them, that I miss them. But I just can’t remember anything about them.
Once I make it to the kitchen, my husband looks up from his newspaper and tells me ‘we will need to pick up the stuff for Thanksgiving dinner tonight’. I nod my head in agreement. I knew this. The kids were coming back tonight and I want to give them a big family dinner.
We are in the car now, my husband and I. The sky is grey and dull. The buildings are very boxy with few architectural features. I know the names of all of these buildings, but I can’t remember seeing them before.
Once at the market, we walk up to the large doors. The market is the only store in this place. It is a large warehouse style store, with tall industrial shelving units, concrete floors and white fluorescent lighting. Everything is either painted white or shades of grey. I take a shopping cart and turn left to go to the food section.
I pass by the shelves of books. I feel myself being drawn toward them. I leave the cart in the middle of the aisle and walk to the books. One in particular stands out: the history of Ancient Greece. There were no pictures on the cover of any of these books, just shades of grey with white lettering. I reached out to grab the book, but my husband gently touched my arm before my hand made contact.
“You didn’t read before, so you won’t read now”, he says to me. He smiles and takes my hand and leads me back to the cart. We continue on to the food section where I pick up a fresh turkey, cranberries and potatoes.
My vision begins to blur again, and a warm light floods through the white fluorescent lighting of the market. I see the man again. I feel happy, warm and safe with him. I can see him pass a black book to me. I reach out and take it from him-The history of Ancient Greece.
The vision fades and I am back with my husband at the market. We begin to walk to the checkout. As we pass the book section again, my husband tells me he forgot something in the produce aisle. He eventually leaves my line of sight and I go back into the book section and pick up the history book. I feel a sense of peace wrap around me. I walk back to the cart and place the book under the grocery items so my husband does not see. He comes running with a can of pumpkin and we continue on to the check out.
There are 3 checkouts, similar to the ones you would find at a hardware store. A small counter, with little space to put your items up. The cashiers were large hulking men. They were pasty white, bald and wore these grey aprons that were too small for their large bodies. The one scans through all of the items, leaving the book for very last. When he picks up the book to scan it, he looks at me hard and says, ‘you didn’t read before, so you won’t read now,’ and places the book in a bin beside him. I then begin to make a scene in the market, yelling that I need that book and it was important to me. My husband got involved and told the cashiers I hadn’t been myself these last few days, the stress of the big family dinner was getting to me. In the confusion, I noticed right by the exit door there was a large crack in the corner of the wall. The crack was letting in all of this warm light to the dank market. I left the group arguing-they didn’t notice my leave and dove into the crack.
On the other side of the seam, I find myself under the seats of an old stadium. The metal support beams criss-crossed in every direction. The ground was covered in sand. Beams of warm light were seeping through the seats above. I start to walk further, when I see the silouhette of a little girl at the end of the row of seats. She has long hair and wears a knee length dress. She raises her one hand to me and makes a motion for me to follow her.
I begin to run toward her, ducking and dodging through the beams of the chairs above. Just as I am about to reach her, she begins to run away from me into a bright abyss. I follow her into the light and find myself in a desert. It is scorching hot, but I don’t feel bothered by this. I can see buildings in the distance, the closest is a red barn which is where the little girl is running to. I start running to the barn when my vision starts to blur again. I see the harsh white light flood my sight. Next I see a roof. I am laying on my back and being pushed on a cart-watching the florescent lights go by. I see my husband walking beside the cart, talking to a doctor on the other side. ‘She needs to be reset. The original memories are filtering through now, if she becomes completely coherent about her past life she will be of no use to us,’ the doctor told my husband.
‘HURRY!’ I heard a little girl’s voice yell at me. I come out of the vision and back into the desert. In the distance I see a group of people moving in my direction. I continue to stand in spot and watch them as they get closer. As they move nearer, I see that they are not people at all, but very tall alien like creatures. White and very thin. Behind them is a group of humans that are chained at the neck to each other. In total there must have been 10 people. The aliens held very long whips that they dragged behind them.
I start to run for the barn, knowing now that these creatures were going to do me harm. I run as fast as I can, as I approach the barn, the little girl opens up a little panel on the side of the barn, not much higher than my waist. I jump into the hole and she quickly follows. I can’t see anything. My eyes need to adjust to the darkness of the barn. As I sit on the ground waiting to see again, I hear a series of clicks, beeps and footsteps approaching the side of the barn. The footsteps stop and then the whole side of the barn begins to curve inward from a force from the outside. Just as I thought the wall couldn’t take anymore, the force stops and the wall returns back to its original position. I hear another series of clicks and beeps and then footsteps leading away from the barn.
At this point I can see inside the barn. I am surrounded by a dozen or so children who are sitting on the ground. They wear dirty and torn clothes, their faces and hair are dirty and messy. To the right of where I am sitting is a door that clearly leads into another side room of the barn. I walk up to the door and open it. The children in the room push back away from the room and hide their faces in their laps, they were clearly crying. I step into the room which is completely dark except for a few beams of light escaping through the old clapboard of the barn. Every so often a light beam would hit objects suspending in the room. They appear to be a collection of stuffed animals that were hung by chains around their necks from the ceiling. They slowly sway in the room.
I could hear the children talking in the other room. They were planning on going back outside. ‘They’ had left they said. It was safe to see the others.
The children opened up the small panel that I jumped through and I could see a whole new world coming to life in front of me.
The desert is now filled with merchants, people buying things, even a few artisans are visible. All of the vendors have these patched together carts of huge wheels. In the desert surrounding the marketplace you can see all of these tracks in the sand from the carts. I step outside into the sunlight. I feel safe. In the distance I see a man walk toward me, I know who he is. I have seen that face before. I start running to him, an intense smile on my face.
